“The Broken
Guitar” conveys a lot, starting from its intelligent title. Its implication is
subtle and indirect, and the complete notion of it becomes clear not until the
denouement of the story. Broken guitar is not only about the materialistic
breaking of the wooden guitar, it further symbolizes rupture of faith, breaking
of promises and shattering of confidence. In all, this book portrays a lot
about mutual understanding, solidarity and expectations.
Atul and Anmol are
the best of friends, they’ve stood by each other through thick and thin.
Despite their differences in terms of family lineage, background and attitude,
they are inseparable. Neither of them is academically inclined—Atul wants to be
a successful singer and Anmol wants to enjoy his life and perhaps pursue a
creative field. After their mediocre board results, Atul’s father reprimands
Atul to give up his singing and separate himself from Anmol. Anmol’s family is
rich and he leads a life of luxury, whereas the middle-class Atul is unsure
about how to make his living. Such a situation arrives at Anmol’s household
too, where his parents ask him to be ‘serious’ about his life and stop wasting
time with Atul. The two good friends continue to stick with each other, sharing
their deepest secrets and aspirations, and dreaming about their respective love
interests. They grow more and more distant from their families, and are
reciprocated with scolds, threats and admonishments. But one day, in the fit of
his rage, Atul’s father breaks his guitar—his life and his sole passion. Will
their social differences allow them to stay befriended? Or will unforeseen turn
of events shatter their age-old friendship? Will either of them be successful
in becoming what they aspire to be?
Written in a
simple and lucid manner, this book will point fingers at the constricted
mindset of society. It will show you how often families burden their own
unfulfilled dreams upon their children, not paying any heed to what they really
want to do in life. It will unfurl the dark truth of hidden expectations from
people, the harsh realities of social discriminations and will definitely
reinforce your faith in friendship. This book testifies the unconditionality of
two inseparable friends, highlighting their unwavering connect and sympathy.
One of the strongest attributes of the book has to be its extremely linear and
plot-driven narrative, which adds a special touch to it and leaves enough room
for the feelings and values that rises from the storyline. Therefore, more than
the actual content of the story, what becomes more noteworthy is the inclusion
of social and economic elements and the highlight of the plight of academically
mediocre students. The climax will remain to be the turning point of the story,
and it ties the whole narrative together to emerge as a winner. Recommended !
