Peeking inside the law profession !

RATING:  ★★★1/2 (3.5/5)

Law and order. Justice. Litigation. Judges and lawyers. All these words somehow point a finger towards the apex of the judiciary…the courtroom. This is where the hearings take place, and this is where the guilt comes to the surface once again. It is this place that witnesses the anguished pleas of the innocent demanding justice, and it is this place which bears proof to the punishments stamped upon the accused and the ones convicted of unlawful pursuits.

‘Yours Legally’ written by Sonia Sahijwani is based upon such a thematic backdrop. It is a collection of six short stories that follows the professional life of a young lawyer Sia as she gathers her experiences by grasping whatever opportunity comes her way. Sia is a fresh face in the law profession, and therefore whatever she faces are stuff she’s never faced before.

There are certain areas of this legal profession which are seldom talked about. Through Sia’s stories, the author keenly addresses these unconventional issues. At times, we see how the complexities of court proceedings and repeated hearings can have a toll on children and the elderly, whereas sometimes we are given a glimpse of the life of criminals in prison. The author weaves her tales surrounding these so-called translucent topics—making the book very fascinating to read.

Although the book is written keeping in mind that the general reader might not be familiar with the intricacies of law and order, the language and the writing style could have had more substance to it. The book promised of a very detailed and gripping account of events, but somehow that expectation was not fully met. It seemed that Sia’s experiences could have had more multi-layered descriptions from several perspectives, so as to provide the actual flavour of the central theme. In all, there was a lack of depth in the narrative.

Even with all that, the book certainly is a good one to pick up. The last two stories which talk about Sia’s visit to a jail and her encounter with the prisoners subject to trial, has been put up quite well. But it could have been better if more insight could have been given to Sia’s personal opinion and response to things.

In light of the rare theme that the book is based upon and in accordance to the author’s smooth-paced style of writing, this book can be picked up by anyone who might be interested in peeking into the life of people involved in the law profession.
