Poems that forgive and inspire | "Reflection of a soul"

The belief in ‘soul’ perhaps is a controversial topic, but the agreement to ‘soulfulness’ is craved for in a definitive manner. Materializing such soulfulness, comes Amrita Sinha’s poetry collection “Reflection of a Soul”.

Reflection is mostly a relative phenomenon. When we reflect upon something, we generally go back to something else, and brace our thoughts in relation to what has happened. Reflections therefore certify to be an act of inward-looking, of thoughtful recollections and convincing consolidation of stray thoughts.

This poetry book attempts to capture the magnanimity of the human soul with the sheer potential it harbours. In an inspirational tone, they try to convey that our daily experiences will eventually lead to something brighter and there is always a larger perspective to minute events. It paints a picture that talks of universalism and connection, which somehow succeeds in whispering that no matter what happens to us, we are never doomed. Second chances always exist. Forgiveness isn’t rare. Making things right keeps on happening.

The tone of most of the poems is largely didactic. They inspire us, tell us to shoot for the stars and never feel discouraged. Never do they harp on the saturation of efforts or the pressure of delivering constantly, rather it is their tone of pacification that seems so appealing. Needless to say, the biggest quality of the poems I found was that—they had a unanimous motherly feel to them. Reading them has a soothing effect on your nerves, just like returning home at the end of a hectic day at work, and at once feel relaxed. This ‘feel at home’ aspect continues to linger in the book throughout and gives the preached motivation a foundation to stand upon. Owing to this, a sense of familiarity settles in.

“Lonely time is not a misery

It’s a bliss for you

The time you can meet with real you

Find the reason for what God has created you

It's better to be a wild flower

Than to be a rose in anyone’s garden

It’s rare to find

But it’s ok, be rare

Stay real always.”

The importance of individual desires, the viability of being who you truly are—comes about to be the biggest lesson of the book. It gives emphasis to the power that comes from within, the depth of the purity of the soul. Through this, the poet perhaps attempts to portray the vastness of original thinking. When pondered upon, the poems also speak of the bigger picture of all happenings, the larger canvas of creation. This theme of connection and relation of various events to be a part of the grand plan, commemorates the essence of harnessing our destiny. In order to uplift and motivate, the poet assumes the role of a forgiving guardian, offering solace and security.

Various literary devices have been used to glorify the poetry. At times, the poet uses simple metaphors to accustom us with faraway ideas. But at times, her metaphorical allegories complexify and seem to dwell on much deeper levels. The comparisons with elements of nature and with various aspects of the universe, were used to make the verses resonate at larger perspectives. Overall, the poems can be situated under the large banner of ‘modern poetry’ and their verses are aligned towards ‘free verse’. They do not resort to any patterned scheme, nor are they arranged methodically. Instead, they appear to be discrete and to-the-point.

Although the simplicity of the poetry is commendable, I wish that they had more substance to it. They mostly harped on a very basic thought, which were elaborated with elucidative elements to make it worthy of poetic feels. It was understandable that the poems were meant to be essentially very down-to-earth, but the poet should have explored them with much more maturity. The main thematic crescendo was often missed, and to add to it, there were unnecessary deviations which seemed to cloud the main line of thought. In an attempt not to resort to any philosophical adherence, the poems failed to diversify and expand. Our horizon was definitely broadened by the ideas that were discussed, but had the poet added more technicalities, it would have resulted in a far better experience. The perspective had to be more familiar yet distant, and increasingly collaborative. A scarcity of beauty and figurativeness was felt. I hope this book finds genuine readers and lovers of modern poetry. I extend my hearty recommendations to support it!
